Child Care Scholarships

Since 1975, the United Way Child Care Scholarship (CCS) Program has helped low income working families within the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County maintain employment by offering financial assistance with their child care expenses. The program also seeks to promote quality child care in our community.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for assistance, the child's parent(s) or guardian must be a resident of the City of Charlottesville or Albemarle County and be employed or enrolled in an educational program or vocational training program (or a combination of the two equal to full-time). Families must also meet program income guidelines. Participants provide pay stubs or employment letters to verify their income and hours of work.

The amount of each child's scholarship will vary depending on household income, the number of persons in the home, the child's age, and the cost of the child care. In all cases, the family pays a co-payment equal to 10% of their gross monthly income.

The choice of a child care provider, whether a center or a home, is made by the parent(s). However, the provider choosen must be either Unregulated, Voluntary Registered, or Licensed. All providers in the program must complete criminal and child protective services background checks, as well as a tuberculosis test. CCS strongly encourages parents to choose a licensed child care provider.

For more information on child care providers, contact Children Youth and Family services at (434) 296-4118 or click here to visit their website.

For more information on the scholarship or for an application, contact Leah Hill, United Way Child Care Specialist, by email or at (434) 972-1715.
