Initiative for Effective Nonprofits
Quote: It is often the case that overworked nonprofit staff lack sufficient time to think. Your grant created an opporutnity for me to do so, with the able suport of a seasoned fundraising professional. I hope that Initiative members will continue to see the great value of their support to local non-profits for this purpose. Susan Donovan, International Rescue Committee

The Initiative for Effective Nonprofits works to provide and facilitate resources to strengthen the governance and management of nonprofit organziations so that they will be more effective in delivering services. Organizations that are well managed are more likely to develop, implement and sustain effective services for their clients.

A partnership between the Wardle Family Foundation and the United Way - Thomas Jefferson Area, the Initiative is focused on strengthening nonprofit organizations serving residents of the City of Charlottesville and the Counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson. The Initiative's management committee is composed of local citizens and representatives of area organizations and foundations.

To date, the Initiative's primary efforts have focused on providing grants and offering workshops to improve the organizational effectiveness of nonprofits. Area nonprofits may seek grants for the following purposes:

  • Mission and Strategic Thinking (Priority)
  • Strategic Relationships (Priority)
  • Governance and Leadership (Priority)
  • Operations and Management
  • Program Delivery
  • Resource Development
