The United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area was founded on June 30, 1943 by as the Charlottesville & Albemarle War and Community Fund by the Charlottesville Chamber of Commerce at the request of John Stewart Bryan, Virginia War Fund President, to serve those in need in our community. The founding meeting took place on the third floor of the current location of the Redlands Club, on the corner of Park and East Jefferson Streets in Downtown Charlottesville.
Over the past 60 years, the United Way has been known by many different names in our community, including:
- Charlottesville & Albemarle War and Community Fund
- Charlottesville & Albemarle Community Chest
- United Givers Fund of Charlottesville and Albemarle
- The Charlottesville & Albemarle United Way
