In 2007, the Charlottesville/Albemarle Partnership for Children, United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area, University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education and over 20 local community and business leaders received a $400,000 grant from the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation to develop a local public/private school readiness initiative called Smart Beginnings. This partnership is now one of over 20 Smart Beginnings collaborations in Virginia.

Since its inception in 2007, Smart Beginnings direct services and community-wide initiatives have successfully increased the quality of local early care and education programs, the level
of support services to families and the extent of community-wide awareness and engagement on the importance of school readiness.

In 2009, Smart Beginnings received a two-year “sustaining level” grant from the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation to build on its early successes and further local sustainability for
school readiness initiatives.
