2012 Human Services Grant Awarded

A Women United Gift That Really Moves Kids!

Women United's 2012 Grant was used to purchase a bus for the Boys & Girls Clubs' Southwood center. Our 2012 Human Services Grant Award recipient is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia. As the leading provider of youth development services in the area, the current Southwood Club is stretched beyond capacity with more than 100 kids per day. The Southwood neighborhood in Albemarle County is a community in crisis, with burgeoning gang activity and youth drug use. The Club used Women United's grant to purchase a bus. This bus has already been used for field trips to museums, swim centers, parks and more. It also transports the kids to the larger Club on Cherry Avenue.

The kids from the Boys & Girls Clubs were so excited about their new bus that they wrote a variety of Thank You letters to Women United. James Pierce, Executive Director of the Clubs, read one at our Luncheon: "Thank you! The bus is awesome! We love the bus. You donated a lot of money. Thank you again! Love, Sydney."
