Women United was formed in Charlottesville in 2005, in partnership with United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area. Originally named Women United in Philanthropy, the group first gathered with the goals of fostering women's philanthropy and helping the Charlottesville/Albemarle area by addressing human service needs through collective donations.
Our Founders developed the following mission statement: Women United in Philanthropy maximizes women's leadership in philanthropy by engaging and educating its membership, increasing charitable contributions, and strengthening our community through the impact of collective giving to support human services.
Since its start, Women United has exceeded 240 members, creating a heterogeneous group in age, vocation and income. Our members range in age from late twenties to early seventies and work all over town in businesses, at UVa, in private practice, social services, and as volunteers. Because the financial status of our members varies, we offer two levels of Individual Membership: Contributing ($100-$599) for those interested in participating in our events and programs, and Donor ($600-$1,499) for those who would like to donate more to our Collective Fund and vote on the recipient(s) of our annual grants. We also embrace Corporate Members and Underwriters starting at the $600 donation level.
In addition to supporting local non-profits with financial donations, Women United offers an on-going series of educational presentations to help its members become better informed and more effective donors. Click here to see a list of our Past Events. Click here for our Upcoming Events.
