2. How may I participate in Women United in Philanthropy?

Membership:
All participants must be women who are General Members. Additional opportunities are explained below. If you are interested in becoming a memeber, please complete the 2007 Membership Form.

  • General Member: all Members of Women United in Philanthropy commit to a General Membership fee of $75 per year, which covers the cost of planning and providing several educational, social events. The General Membership fee of $75 covers program costs only and is not tax-deductible. Membership is valid through December 31, 2007. Members are encouraged to bring guests to Women United in Philanthropy events. Receiving your membership fee as soon as possible, to assist in offsetting expenses, would be appreciated.

  • Donor Member: a Donor Member also makes a tax-deductible gift of $500 or more in addition to her General Membership fee of $75, for a total of $575. Donor Memberships comprise the Collective Fund and Donor Members will vote on the use and allocation of this Fund. Donor Member gifts are due by April 1, 2007.

  • Other giving levels are welcome and provide needed support for the Women United in Philanthropy Collective Fund.

3. How does Women United in Philanthropy partner with the United Way- Thomas Jefferson Area?

Women United in Philanthropy was established by community women in partnership with the United Way. The United Way provides support services such as staffing, mailing, computer, telephone, and accounting for Women United in Philanthropy, but receives no contributions from Women United in Philanthropy

Giving to Women United in Philanthropy does not represent giving to the United Way. The United Way provides information and expertise about local needs and programs to Women United in Philanthropy, but does not determine how Women United in Philanthropy funds are spent. Only Donor Members can vote on its funding decisions.

4. How will my Women United in Philanthropy Donor gift be used?

Women United in Philanthropy Donor gifts will establish and encourage the growth of the Women United in Philanthropy Collective Fund, which supports human service needs in our community. Donor Members will research options on proposed uses of the Fund and will determine, by voting, allocation of the Fund. For 2007/2008, we will be focusing on local non-profits who offer programs focused on women and children.

5. Can I direct my Women United in Philanthropy gift to a specific charity, different from that which the Women United in Philanthropy donor group decides upon?

No. Women United in Philanthropy gifts must go to the Women United in Philanthropy Collective Fund. Donor Members will research options on proposed uses of the Fund and will determine, by voting, allocation of the Fund.

6. What are the benefits of participating in Women United in Philanthropy?

Women United in Philanthropy benefits its General and Donor Members as it benefits the community. Participants have the opportunity to:

  • get to know women from many walks of life who care about the community

  • learn about the community (needs, organizations, programs, people) and how to give wisely

  • tailor their involvement to fit personal circumstances and priorities

  • be a force for change through sound giving.
